- World Leprosy Day, traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of January globally, holds a special significance in India as it coincides with Mahatma Gandhi’s Punyatithi on January 30 every year.
- The theme for World Leprosy Day 2024 is “Beat Leprosy”. This theme encapsulates the dual objectives of the day: to eradicate the stigma associated with leprosy and to promote the dignity of people affected by the disease

Back to basic- Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria called “Mycobacterium leprae”.
- The disease affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.
- Leprosy is known to occur at all ages ranging from early childhood to old age.
- Leprosy is not inherited, but it is transmitted via droplets, from the nose and mouth, during close and frequent contact with untreated cases.

कुष्ठ रोग, जिसे हैनसेन रोग के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, एक पुरानी संक्रामक बीमारी है जो "माइकोबैक्टीरियम लेप्री" नामक एक प्रकार के बैक्टीरिया के कारण होती है।
यह रोग त्वचा, परिधीय तंत्रिकाओं, ऊपरी श्वसन पथ की म्यूकोसल सतहों और आँखों को प्रभावित करता है।
कुष्ठ रोग बचपन से लेकर बुढ़ापे तक सभी उम्र में होने के लिए जाना जाता है।
कुष्ठ रोग विरासत में नहीं मिलता है, लेकिन यह अनुपचारित मामलों के साथ निकट और लगातार संपर्क के दौरान नाक और मुंह से बूंदों के माध्यम से फैलता है।
