विश्व मेट्रोलॉजी / माप विज्ञान दिवस (World Metrology Day) हर साल 20 मई को विश्व स्तर पर मनाया जाता है, जो 1875 में मीटर कन्वेंशन (Metre Convention) पर हस्ताक्षर करने की वर्षगांठ के उपलक्ष्य में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन कई राष्ट्र, अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर मेट्रोलॉजी और संबंधित क्षेत्र में इसकी उन्नति के बारे में जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए सहयोग करते हैं।

मीटर कन्वेंशन जिसे ‘मीटर की संधि’ भी कहा जाता है, एक वैश्विक सुसंगत माप प्रणाली का आधार प्रदान करती है जो वैज्ञानिक खोज और नवाचार, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय व्यापार, औद्योगिक निर्माण और जीवन की गुणवत्ता में सुधार और वैश्विक पर्यावरण की सुरक्षा को प्रोत्साहित करती है।

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय भार और माप ब्यूरो (International Bureau of Weights and Measures – BIPM) एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संगठन है जो chemistry, ionising radiation, physical metrology और co-ordinated universal time जैसे 4 क्षेत्रों में मानक माप के लिए कार्य करता है। इस संगठन की स्थापना 20 मई, 1875 को हुई थी, इसका मुख्यालय फ्रांस के सेंट-क्लाउड में है। वर्तमान में 61 देश इस संगठन के सदस्य हैं।

विश्व मेट्रोलॉजी दिवस सत्रह देशों के प्रतिनिधियों द्वारा पेरिस, फ्रांस में 20 मई 1875 को मीटर कन्वेंशन के हस्ताक्षर का वार्षिक उत्सव है। वर्ल्ड मेट्रोलॉजी डे प्रोजेक्ट को इंटरनेशनल ऑर्गनाइजेशन ऑफ लीगल मेट्रोलॉजी (OIML) और ब्यूरो इंटरनेशनल डेस पॉयड्स एट मेसर्स (BIPM) द्वारा संयुक्त रूप से जारी किया गया है।

The theme of World Metrology Day 2021 is Measurement for Health. This topic was chosen to create awareness about the important role of measurement in health and thus for the betterment of all of us.

The day is observed in Paris on 20 May 1875 to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of an international treaty called the Meter Convention, by which the International Bureau of Weights and Measures - BIPM was created. The convention set the framework for global collaboration in science and measurement as well as its commercial, social and industrial applications.
